During the Edo era, farmers in Kagawa Prefecture vere encouraged to cultivate sugar cane due to the region” s warm climate and low rainfall. At the time, sugar was a luxury item that was unavailable to the average household. However, around the Meiji era, people would use their precious sugar to create an mochi zoni once per year as a special dish for the New Year. This is said to be the origin of an mochi zoni.
The light MISO used in this soup is said to have first made its way to the region from Kyoto and is loved as an ingredient for many dishes during the winter months
